Dr. Louise Temple

Dr. Temple has over 23 years of experience teaching and doing research with undergradutes. She is currently a professor in the Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) Department at James Madison University. A main focus of her research is studying Bordetella avium, the causative agent of bordetellosis in turkeys. Her goal is to understand this pathogenesis and to develop a vaccine to prevent this upper respiratory disease.  Dr. Temple has always been closely involved with her students while at the same time building collaborative projects with faculty colleagues.  In JMU’s Viral Discovery Program, she facilitates early research experiences for college students using bacteriophage discovery and genomics as the study model.  In addition to her scientific and educational contributions at Drew University (Madison, NJ) and James Madison University, Dr. Temple has collaborated with scientists both nationally and internationally. She has obtained funding for travel to bring collaborators together for research and teaching purposes and for summer workshops. She also taught in Murthal, India, working collectively with students at a local university and research students at JMU. Dr. Temple has served in numerous academic leadership positions and uses her experiences in these roles to mentor other faculty on issues of scholarship and teaching at the undergraduate level. Dr. Temple describes herself as "addicted to students", and explains that she is not just a teacher, but also a student of her students. Her synergistic approach to academia has helped to guide countless numbers of her students into scientific careers.
